About the Natural Species Being Replicated

Macrocystis pyrifera, commonly known as Giant Kelp or Giant Bladder Kelp, is found along the eastern Pacific coast from Baja California north to southeastern Alaska. It is also found in Southern Hemisphere waters near South America, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.

In nature, Giant Kelp is the largest of the brown algae and can grow to extraordinary lengths, with individual plants exceeding 50 m (160 ft). Because currents cause the long kelp to grow and drift diagonally through the water column, its total length may substantially exceed the depth of the water in which it grows.

Natural Giant Kelp grows from a holdfast anchored to the substrate. Long branching stipes extend upward through the water column, with blades developing at intervals along the stipes. A distinctive gas-filled float, or pneumatocyst, occurs at the base of each blade and helps support the kelp toward the water's surface.

About the Pangea America Replica

The Pangea America Macrocystis pyrifera product is an artificial, synthetic habitat replica designed to recreate the distinctive terminal blade and visual character of natural Giant Kelp.

The artificial terminal blade and included barbed anchor peg allow the product to be incorporated into custom kelp-forest installations and habitat displays. It is suitable for aquariums, zoological exhibits, museums, themed environments, and other aquatic displays without the requirements associated with living or preserved kelp.
